Early Life & Education
Daði Freyr, now 31, was born on June 30, 1992, in Reykjavík, Iceland.
He grew up in Denmark until the age of nine, then his family moved back to Iceland and settled in the Southern Region, first in Laugaland and later in Ásahreppur. He has a sister named Sigrún Birna Pétursdóttir.
He also experimented with electronic music production and songwriting. He attended the South Iceland Multicultural School, where he met some of his future bandmates.
He graduated from Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands (College of the Southern Region) in 2012 and moved to Berlin, Germany, where he received a BA in Music Management and Audio Production in 2017.
Personal Life
Daði Freyr is married to Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir, a dancer and performer who has been a part of his music project, Gagnamagnið, since 2017.
They met in 2014 when they were both studying in Berlin. They have two daughters, Áróra Björg, born in 2019, and Kría Sif, born in 2021.
Daði has said that his daughters inspire some of his songs, such as “Think About Things” and “10 Years”. Daði and his family live in Berlin but often visit Iceland and connect closely with their homeland.
Career
Daði Freyr started his music career in 2012 when he co-founded the band RetRoBot with his friend Kristján Pálmi. They were joined by singer Gunnlaugur Bjarnason and guitarist Guðmundur Einar Vilbergsson, whom Daði had met at school.
The band won the Músíktilraunir (Music Experiments) competition that year, and Daði was chosen as the best electronic musician of the year. The band released one album, Blackout, in 2013 before disbanding.
In 2017, Daði participated in Söngvakeppnin, the Icelandic national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, with the song “Is This Love?” (Icelandic: Hvað með það?).
He was supported on stage by a group consisting of his sister Sigrún Birna Pétursdóttir (backing vocalist), his wife Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir (dancer), and friends Hulda Kristín Kolbrúnardóttir (backing vocalist), Stefán Hannesson (dancer), and Jóhann Sigurður Jóhannsson (dancer).
The group was known as Gagnamagnið, which means “the Data” or “the Data Plan” in Icelandic. They wore signature teal green sweaters with pixel art portraits of themselves printed on them. They finished in second place in the final, losing to Svala Björgvinsdóttir.
In 2020, Daði and Gagnamagnið returned to Söngvakeppnin, this time with the infectious song “Think About Things,” which Daði wrote for his daughter Áróra. They won the competition with a landslide and were set to represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020.
However, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, Daði and Gagnamagnið gained international popularity and won alternative competitions in several countries, such as Austria, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.
The song also became a viral hit on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube and received praise from celebrities like Russell Crowe, Jennifer Garner, and Will Ferrell. The song reached the top 10 in several European charts and the top 40 in the UK.
In 2021, Daði and Gagnamagnið were confirmed as Iceland’s representatives for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, with the song “10 Years”, which Daði wrote for his wife Árný.
They delivered a memorable song performance during the competition, featuring their signature sweaters, dance moves, and instruments.
Unfortunately, due to a member testing positive for COVID-19, a prerecorded performance from the second rehearsal was broadcast during their semi-final and the final.
Despite the challenges, their talent shone through, and they achieved an impressive fourth-place finish with 378 points.
Besides his Eurovision endeavors, Daði Freyr has also pursued a solo career, releasing several albums and singles under his name or Mixophrygian.
Some of his notable works include the albums Where We Wanna Be (2017), I Made an Album (2023), and the singles “Every Moment Is Christmas With You” (2020), “Feel the Love” (2021), and “Somebody Else Now” (2021).
He has also collaborated with artists such as Ásgeir, Jónsi, and Ultraflex. He has performed at festivals and venues like Iceland Airwaves, Eurosonic, and the Berlin Festival. He has also created his app, Neon Planets, which allows users to create music and visuals.
