John Kennedy is an American politician and attorney/legal counsel. A Republican, he has been a U.S. Senator from Louisiana, since January 3, 2017. He was previously Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue, from January 8, 1996 to April 30, 1999, and Treasurer of Louisiana, from January 10, 2000 to January 3, 2017. He was a Democrat until 2007.

He was raised in Zachary, Louisiana. He is married to Rebecca “Becky” Stulb, with whom he has one child. John is a Methodist. He is not related to the American Kennedy political family of the north, at least not among recent ancestors.

John’s great-grandfather was landowner Leonidas Calhoun. Leonidas owned hundreds of acres in Catahoula and Concordia Parish, worked on by sharecroppers. John inherited much of this land.
