Ranch Bronc Rider Skee Burkes; Died of Injuries Sustained in Abilene Expo Centre Competition
Skee Burkes, a competitor in the Ranch Bronc riding competition, passed away from injuries sustained when the young rider was bucked off from his horse during the rodeo event; he died at 26.
An unfortunate death occurred during the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) Rodeo performance on September 9, 2023, at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene; Burkes competed in the event through the United Professional Rodeo Association.
The Expo Center Board of Directors and staff regrettably informed The West Texas Fair & Rodeo community and released an official statement regarding Burke’s death, which stated:
“Texas’ Abilene – We regret to notify our community that a death occurred during the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) Rodeo performance on September 9, 2023. Skee Burkes, a Ranch Bronc riding competition competitor, passed away from injuries sustained when he was bucked off the Bronc. Through the United Professional Rodeo Association, Burkes competed in the event.”

Skee Burkes was a ranch bronc rider, an oilfield supervisor, and a leather worker. Burkes was a lovely man, a skilled cutter and working cow horse, adored by all his loved ones.
In contrast to the PRCA, a rodeo-affiliated organization, the United Professional Rodeo Association includes several successful regional organizations with a long history of rodeo in the southern United States.

Bronc Riding Nation confirmed his death news through a Facebook post and announced Burkes’ memorial services on the same post,
“Skee Burkes passed away last night at the West Texas Fair & Rodeo after being stepped on by the horse he had joyfully nodded for. When Skee’s family, friends, and rodeo enthusiasts gathered this morning, they saw a bronc rider breaking the clouds in the Abilene skies and took solace in the knowledge that Skee was at peace, doing what he loved, and on his way home to glory.”
Burkes’s memorial services will begin on September 17, 2023, in the afternoon at the Henrietta Cowboy Church in Henrietta, Texas. Burke’s funeral customs will take place at Matador, Texas, where he will laid to rest.
